Unknown for the Glory of God

We are familiar with the heroes of the Bible. Our attention is often focused on these great characters. Yet there are also countless numbers of people in the Bible who are unnamed and unknown. These unnamed and unknown people are no less worthy of attention.

1 Kings 19 tells the story of the Prophet Elijah when he fled from King Ahab’s wicked wife, Jezebel who vowed to kill him. He traveled to Mount Horeb where God sustained him with food and water as an angel ministered to him.

The word of the Lord came to Elijah and he was asked, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Elijah said he had been zealous for the Lord God of Armies but the Israelites had abandoned God. Elijah said, “I alone am left, and they are looking for me to take my life.”

God told him to go out and stand on the mountain in the Lord’s presence and at that moment the Lord passed by. There was a great and mighty wind but the Lord was not in the wind. There was an earthquake but the Lord as not in the earthquake. There was a fire but the Lord was not in the fire. Then there was a whisper, a still small voice.

God told Elijah there were 7,000 in Israel who had not bowed their knee to Baal. Everyone remembers Elijah, but nobody knoww or particularly remembers the 7,000 who stood firm. In standing firm, they glorified God.

In ministry, God can put people in the forefront where they are known far and wide. That is up to Him. More often, there are countless servants of God whose names will not be written down, known, or even remembered much beyond their immediate context. With this reality in mind, I would implore you to be content with being unknown for the glory of God.

A fittingly anonymous person stated: “When you can truly love to be unknown—that is dying to self.” (Grace Quotes)
